Unusual diffuse X-ray source in the Galactic center region

چکیده
We report the ASCA and Chandra discovery of a diffuse X-ray source in the Galactic center region. The X-ray spectrum is fitted with a nonequilibrium ionization (NEI) plasma model of about 6-keV temperature. The model requires higher than solar metal abundances, a young plasma age of ' 100 years and a large NH value of about 1023 cm−2. The NH value constrains the source position to be in the Galactic center region at about 8.5 kpc distance. The high resolution X-ray image with the Chandra ACIS shows a ring of 10′′ radius which corresponds to 0.4 pc at the Galactic center, and a tail-like structure. Although the morphology is peculiar, the other X-ray features are likely to be a very young supernova remnant, possibly in a free expansion phase. Chandra Observations of the Galactic Center and Nearby Edge-on Galaxies
I review our recent Chandra surveys of the center region of the Milky Way and other nearby edge-on galaxies. Our Galactic center survey, consisting of 30 overlapping pointings, provides an unprecedented high-resolution, broadband X-ray view of a 0.8x2 square degree swath along the Galactic plane. This X-ray panorama allows a separation of the discrete source and diffuse X-ray components. Our pr...
متن کاملThe Origin of X-ray Emission from a Galactic Center Molecular Cloud: Low Energy Cosmic Ray Electrons
The Galactic center region near l≈ 0.2 hosts a mixture of nonthermal linear filaments and thermal radio continuum features associated with the radio Arc. Chandra observations of this region reveal an X-ray filament and diffuse emission with an extent of roughly 60′′ × 2′′ and 5′ × 3′, respectively. The X-ray filament lies at the edge of the nonthermal radio filaments and a dense molecular shell...
متن کاملObservations of Discrete Galactic Sources with Osse
The Oriented Scintillation Spectrometer Experiment (OSSE) on the COMPTON Gamma Ray Observatory has undertaken comprehensive observations of many galactic sources since launch in April 1991. These include investigations of binary X-ray sources, pulsars, several transient X-ray sources observed as Targets-ofOpportunity, and Nova Cygni 1992. Multiple observations of the galactic center region were...
متن کاملX–ray emission from the giant molecular clouds in the Galactic Center region and the discovery of new X–ray sources
We report the results of X–ray (2–10 keV) observations of the giant molecular clouds Sgr B, Sgr C and Sgr D in the Galactic Center region, together with the discovery of the point-like source SAX J1748.2–2808. The data have been obtained with the MECS instrument on the BeppoSAX satellite. The core of Sgr B2 has an X–ray luminosity of ∼6×10 erg s and its spectrum is characterized by a strong Fe ...
متن کاملOn the Nature of the X-ray Emission from the Galactic Center Region
The origin of the X-ray emission from the central region of the Galaxy has remained a mystery, despite extensive study over the past two decades. A fundamental question is the relative contribution of the point-source and diffuse components of this emission, which is critical to understanding the high-energy phenomena and processes unique to this Galactic nuclear environment. Here, we report on...
